Note: Internet-based webinars which include the involvement of an instructor and participants in real time, and which allow for communication with the instructor through messaging, telephone or other means are equivalent to live courses, and do not count towards self-study hours.

2026 Renewal Cycle
Dentists must complete 30 hours of continuing education to renew on active status. Continuing education for renewal must be completed between September 1, 2024, and August 31, 2026. Self-study activities are limited to 12 hours per renewal period.
Required Courses:
Evidence of mandatory reporter training offered through the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services for child abuse and dependent adult abuse within the required timeframe for those who practice in Iowa. For more information, refer to IAC 481—573.1(1)(e).
CPR. For more information, refer to IAC 481—573.1(1)(f).
Minimum of 1 hour in infection control. For more information, refer to IAC 481—573.1(1)(g).
An infection control course is available for purchase through Impact Dental Training.
Minimum of 1 hour in jurisprudence. For more information, refer to IAC 481—573.1(1)(h).
If you prescribe opioids, a minimum of one hour of continuing education on opioids. For more information, refer to IAC 481—573.1(1)(i).
Dentists may apply a maximum of 15 hours from the previous renewal period. However, you may not carry forward hours for courses in the areas of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), infection control, jurisprudence, dental radiography, or opioids completed during the previous renewal period.
