Clarification on Medicaid Prior Authorization Requirements

Recently, IDA members received several notices regarding Iowa Medicaid's prior authorization requirements for crowns. Based on feedback from our members, the IDA contacted the IME. IME has now agreed to remove all stainless steel crowns from the prior authorization list. This includes D2929, D2930, D2933, D2934. In addition, they are removing D7960 Frenulectomy from the list of services requiring a PA.

Please visit the DHS website and look under the heading "Prior Authorization Resources."  It is important to note that IME's comprehensive list will not take effect until January 1, 2019. In the meantime, dentists should continue to seek prior authorization as they have in the past through Delta Dental of Iowa, MCNA, or Medicaid fee-for-service.
