Welcome to the Iowa Dental Association

The Iowa Dental Association (IDA) is the premier professional association representing dentists in the state of Iowa. In existence since 1863, the IDA is home to over 1,800 Iowa dentists, which represents approximately 80% of the licensed dentists in the state.

All IDA member dentists are not only members of the IDA, but also the American Dental Association (ADA) and their local district society.

IDA’s mission is to encourage the improvement of the health of the public, to promote the art and science of dentistry, and to represent the interests of the members of the dental profession and the public which it serves.

IDB Discussed Guidelines & Rules and Elected New Officers at Recent Meeting

On June 11, the Iowa Dental Board (IDB) determined when the Governor’s emergency proclamation for dental services expires, dentists will be required to follow the CDC Guidelines for Infection Control in Dental Health-Care Settings – 2003. In addition, IDB recommends dentists use their professional judgement to incorporate recommendations from the CDC Interim Infection Prevention and Control Guidance for Dental Settings During the COVID-2019 Pandemic to meet the appropriate standard of care. The IDB will release an official statement regarding this decision soon, but we wanted to share this with IDA members now to assist you in planning for the future. Thank you for your patience and understanding throughout the pandemic as you worked to keep your staff and patients safe.
The current emergency proclamation remains in place until June 26, and requires compliance with the Board's Guidelines for the Safe Transition Back to Practice. For more information regarding the guidelines, please contact IDB staff at 515.281.7369.
In addition, IDB voted to proceed with draft administrative rules requiring the training for the placement of sealants by a dental assistant to be a level 2 expanded function. The IDA and other specialty groups spoke in opposition of this decision. The draft rules will now go to the Administrative Rules Review Committee (ARRC) for final review before becoming effective.
Finally, IDB elected the following officers:
  • Chair – Dr. Monica Foley, Bettendorf
  • Vice Chair – Dr. Gregory Ceraso, Johnston
  • Secretary – Dr. Lisa Holst, West Des Moines
Congratulations to these IDA members on their new roles with the IDB.
