Welcome to the Iowa Dental Association

The Iowa Dental Association (IDA) is the premier professional association representing dentists in the state of Iowa. In existence since 1863, the IDA is home to over 1,800 Iowa dentists, which represents approximately 80% of the licensed dentists in the state.

All IDA member dentists are not only members of the IDA, but also the American Dental Association (ADA) and their local district society.

IDA’s mission is to encourage the improvement of the health of the public, to promote the art and science of dentistry, and to represent the interests of the members of the dental profession and the public which it serves.

Reminder: IDB Guidelines In Effect Through May 30

We have received a number of questions due to the updated guidance from the CDC (updated on May 13, 2021) stating that fully vaccinated individuals no longer need to wear a mask or practice physical distancing outside and in most indoor areas. It is important to note this guidance is only applicable for daily activities, and it does not apply to healthcare settings and dental offices. According to the CDC guidelines for healthcare settings (updated on April 27, 2021), fully-vaccinated healthcare professionals should continue to wear source control while at work.
Further, the CDC Guidance for Dental Settings (updated on December 4, 2020) currently states, “DHCP should wear a face mask or cloth face covering at all times while they are in the dental setting, including in breakrooms or other spaces where they might encounter co-workers.” We recognize the discrepancy between all the different guidelines has created some confusion as to what is permitted in the dental setting.
Ultimately, dental offices in Iowa are required to comply with the Iowa Dental Board (IDB) Guidelines for the Safe Transition Back to Practice mandated by the Governor's emergency proclamation order through May 30. IDA remains in constant communication with the IDB and ADA regarding the IDB and CDC guidance, and we will continue to keep you updated of any changes.
