2020 IDPAC Election Update

Now that election day is behind us, here is an update on Iowa’s current political landscape as IDA looks towards the opening of the 89th Iowa General Assembly.

All 100 members of the Iowa House and half of the 50-member Iowa Senate were up for re-election on November 3. Once the results were in, it was clear that Republicans had a big night in Iowa. They maintained their current majority in the Senate and picked up six seats in the House.

bradley-jeneaeryWe are pleased to report Dr. Steven Bradley (left), IDA Past President and Past Chair of the Iowa Dental Board, was declared the winner in the House District 58 race after receiving 53.6 percent of the vote. Dr. Bradley joins fellow dentist Dr. Tom Jeneary (right), who won his re-election bid in House District 5.

ia houseThe main focal point this election cycle was the Iowa House. Leading up to the election, Democrats felt they were in a strong position to gain control of the House. However, on election night, their attempt was rejected with only one House seat flipping to Democratic control. Instead, Republicans were able to pick up six seats from incumbent Democrats and flip an open seat that was formerly held by a Democrat. In the end, Republicans increased their majority in the House to 59 Republicans compared to 41 Democrats.

ia senateThe Senate composition remains at 32 Republicans compared to 18 Democrats. Republicans flipped one seat in the Senate and won all incumbent races. In a tight race, the Democrats took control of District 22, an open seat held by retiring Senate President Charles Schneider.

The campaigns IDPAC contributed to had a very successful night. Of the Senate candidates who received an IDPAC contribution, 100 percent (11/11) won their races. As for the House candidates who received an IDPAC contribution, 96 percent (47/49) were re-elected. Thank you to all IDA members who have already contributed to IDPAC this year. Our legislative efforts would not be successful without your support.

Even though the election in Iowa has come to an end, the fight for dentistry is just beginning. With the Legislative Session scheduled to begin on January 11, 2021, we need all the resources we can get going into session. If you haven’t done so already, now is the time to contribute to IDPAC to ensure dental priorities are at the forefront of legislators’ minds. We need the support of every Iowa dentist. Please consider contributing today to help prepare for the session ahead.
